“Major in Mac” Roadshow in Yusok Ishak House from 2nd to 20th July

June 23rd, 2007

MacNUS will be holding a Mac Roadshow entitled “Major in Mac”, starting from next Monday, 25th June 2007 at the Yusok Ishak House. There will be Macs on display, and MacNUS staff will be there to answer all your queries about switching or the Mac platform and how a Mac will be suitable for your University life. You can even bring your Mac along (laptops only please haha) and ask the staff on duty for help or tips to increase your work productivity on the Mac. Also look out for possibly exciting freebies and product demos throughout the road show. The details are as follows;

Venue: Yusok Ishak House Level 3, just outside the student TV room
Time: Approximately 9am to 3pm daily
Period: All weekdays from 25th June to 20th July, unless stated otherwise

Do refer back here for more updates and details on the roadshow.

Impt: Due to some complications of manpower we are not able to open the booth on 3rd July.

Edit: Freebies are in. iMac is in. We are going all out for the last 7 days of the roadshow!!!

An update on everything that’s been happening to the site and the forums

June 1st, 2007

I’m sure many would have already noticed that the MacNUS site has very infrequent updates, not to mention that your comments have actually failed to appear in the individual posts. No, I didn’t moderate your comments because I don’t like them or something, it is just that MacNUS, both the site and the forum, has been spammed so much that it is really frustrating to have to solve the problems during the examination period.

The forums are in similar shape, in fact, worse, since everyone can see clearly the spam created by the bots. The forums were hacked when our host, Differenthost’s server developed problems with emailing, which resulted in the forums losing its email registration capabilities, which in turn caused the increase in bots attacking the forums. Due to all that crap, I have no choice but to cut off the forums for the past few months.

Well, all these problems will now change. According to Differenthost, that old server’s been scraped. So now we will not have problems with the email registration. However, the old forums have been spammed so much that it will take too much resources and time to salvage it. Thus I’m announcing that we will kill the old forums, for a brand new one that’s still in the works. PHPbb, which we have been using for the old forums, is not exactly the best forum software out there, not to mention that the project’s been kind of stagnant ever since one of their key developers left the team. Thus we have decided to try out various other options, including the very popular SMF, and PUNbb, among the rest. We (okay seriously speaking, only ME) will be hard at work with the testing and I believe everything will be up and running by mid-June. However, the old database will be gone, and all existing members will have to sign up again.

As for the site, I’m kinda irritated with the way how it renders in firefox, and have been wanting to kill the old theme for a long time. Luckily, NS Design Studios released iTheme, which I have modified (last night) to make it the new theme for MacNUS’ main site, at least for the next few months. Do comment if you like it.

As for the spammed comments, as I am typing this now I am still trying to moderate out the good stuff from the spam. Hopefully I’ll be done soon and get the main site up and running again.

Well, until my next open letter (Hehz), Seeya.

Yours Sincerely,

Ren Jinshen Ryu
President
